MPP Walker: Digital technologies can deliver faster and better services

OWEN SOUND - Recently there have been some commenters in the media concerned about our government’s Digital Strategy.

Our government is committed to adopting digital technologies and practices to deliver simpler, faster, better services.

A key area of our digital plan includes unlocking the value of government data and enabling Ontario firms to develop data-driven business models and seize the commercial value of data.

Think about how much we could improve the quality of care if we could examine things like mental health or addiction rates at hospitals across the province. Analyzing this information could let us better target specific services to exactly where they are needed.

Put simply, our government collects a lot of data from Ontarians that is not being used to their best benefit.

I want to assure those who have voiced concerns that as we implement our digital plan and develop an Ontario Data Strategy we will ensure secure digital methods and privacy protection.

As part of our government’s Data Strategy, we performed public consultations through February and March 2019, and will soon begin the second round of consulting with industry, legal, privacy experts and the public.

These discussions will provide the basis for any plan we put in place.

We have also committed to establishing a Minister’s Task Force on Data composed of leading experts and key stakeholders to ensure our regulations and protections are modern, responsible, and reasonable.

We should not close the door to using data – anonymized and aggregated – as a way to generate value for the people of Ontario.

We’re in the process of asking critical questions on how best to unlock data. No decisions have yet been made and any that are will be guided by what we hear from the people of Ontario. Whatever is decided, I can assure you that the privacy and security of Ontarians will always be our top priority.
